XTB overview

XTB is a Polish-founded, London-listed broker built around its own xStation platform. It began as a predominantly forex and CFD house and has gradually widened into shares, ETFs and commodities, always keeping the proprietary platform at the centre of the experience. The result is a cohesive, fast environment for traders who are happy to work inside XTB's tooling rather than plug in third-party terminals.

The platform is the story here. xStation is available as a web terminal, a downloadable desktop application and a mobile app, and the three share a common layout: a clean chart, an instrument sidebar, an order ticket and a clear profit-and-loss display. It is less modular than MetaTrader but also less cluttered, and order entry is deliberately streamlined.

Pricing is generally competitive on the headline products, but the right account type and the right entity matter. Some markets are commission-free, others carry a small per-trade or spread-plus-commission structure, and swap rates apply to overnight positions. Our view is that XTB suits active traders who want a responsive platform, transparent ticket-level costs and a broad CFD catalogue, while investors looking for direct share ownership or a rich MetaTrader ecosystem will find better fits elsewhere.

XTB is a group of separately regulated companies. The entity that opens your account — XTB UK, XTB Poland or another group company — decides which products you can trade, what leverage you are offered, which investor-protection scheme covers you and how fees are structured. Always check the legal entity named in your client agreement.

XTB scores well on platform coherence and trading cost transparency. xStation is one of the more polished proprietary terminals in retail FX, the order ticket shows the full cost before you confirm, and the mobile app genuinely mirrors the desktop layout rather than feeling like a stripped-down companion. That consistency is rare.

It also scores well on breadth of CFD markets. Stock CFDs are a particular strength, with coverage that competes with larger brokers, and the ticket-level fee display makes it easy to compare costs across markets. The group has a long operating history and is supervised by several major regulators.

It loses points on platform choice. If your strategy is built around MetaTrader indicators, cTrader automation or TradingView execution, you will need to look elsewhere. It also loses points on real underlying ownership: XTB is primarily a CFD broker, so investors who want to hold actual shares or ETFs in a custody account will not find that here.

Section 05

XTB fees & trading costs

XTB's pricing is a mix of spread-only and commission-plus-spread depending on the instrument and account type. The important thing is that the broker is generally transparent about the structure: the order ticket shows the estimated total cost before you trade, including any commission or swap.

Share CFDs are usually the area where commission matters most. Major market shares can carry a small fixed or percentage charge per side, while forex, indices and many commodities are typically spread-only. Overnight financing is charged on leveraged positions and can become a meaningful cost if you hold trades for more than a few days.

Spread and commission are shown per account type — a raw or ECN figure is not comparable with a spread-only account.

  • The FXSpreadMeter view compares each cost against the current pricing of other active brokers in our directory for the same product type. It is a relative judgement, not a rating of the broker as a whole.
  • Share CFD commission can vary significantly by exchange, so a US stock CFD may not cost the same as a UK or German stock CFD.
  • Holding leveraged positions overnight accumulates financing that can exceed the spread over a multi-day or multi-week trade.

Section 07

Is XTB regulated?

XTB is not a single regulated entity. The group operates through several locally supervised companies, and the entity that holds your account determines the regulatory framework, leverage limits and compensation scheme that apply to you.

That matters because the same brand name can coexist with different client protections. A UK retail client and a Polish retail client may see similar platforms but different leverage caps, different product availability and different complaint and compensation routes.

Section 08

Opening a XTB account

Account opening is fully online and generally fast. You register, complete an identity check, answer the standard suitability questionnaire and can then fund the account. Verification is a regulatory requirement, not an optional step, and the account is not fully functional until it clears.

We do not publish a guaranteed approval time. The speed depends on the documents you upload, your jurisdiction and the checks the entity runs.

  1. 1

    Create the account

Register with your email and country of residence. The country determines which XTB entity and platform version you will use.

  2. 2

    Verify your identity

Upload government-issued photo ID and a proof of address. This is required before you can withdraw or trade in most jurisdictions.

  3. 3

    Complete the suitability test

Answer the knowledge and experience questions honestly. Your answers may restrict access to leveraged products.

  4. 4

    Choose your account settings

Select your base currency where available and confirm the leverage and product access for your entity.

  5. 5

    Fund the account

Deposit via a supported method for your region. No fixed minimum applies to most standard accounts.

  6. 6

    Try the demo first

Use the virtual environment to test xStation order entry, charting and the fee display before risking real capital.

Section 09

Deposits & withdrawals

Funding is straightforward and covers the standard methods in most regions: bank transfer, cards and supported e-wallets. The main thing to watch is currency matching: if your account base currency differs from your funding currency, or from the currency of the instruments you want to trade, conversion costs can add up.

Withdrawals are typically returned to the original funding source for anti-money-laundering reasons. XTB generally does not charge a withdrawal fee, but your bank or payment provider may impose its own charges or currency spreads.

Availability varies by region and entity.

Section 10

XTB platforms

XTB's trading environment is built around xStation 5. The same platform is available in the browser, as a desktop download and as a mobile app, and the three versions are visually consistent. The design philosophy is to surface everything a retail trader needs — chart, order ticket, position list, account balance — without the complexity of a professional terminal.

The platform includes a built-in trader's calculator, market sentiment indicators, news integration and screeners. It is not as deep as MetaTrader in terms of indicator and expert-advisor libraries, but it is faster to learn and more responsive out of the box.

xStation 5 web

No installation, full order entry, charting, account management and news in the browser.

Check before funding: Whether the built-in indicator set covers the analysis you need.

xStation 5 desktop

A more responsive, standalone version of the web platform with additional workspace stability.

Check before funding: That your operating system is supported and that you are comfortable with the proprietary layout.

xStation mobile app

Strong parity with the desktop experience, including charting, order management and alerts.

Check before funding: That biometric login and two-factor authentication are enabled.

MetaTrader 4 / 5

Not offered.

Check before funding: If your strategy depends on MT4/5 indicators or EAs, XTB is not the right broker.

TradingView / cTrader

Not integrated for execution.

Check before funding: You would need to analyse externally and execute in xStation.

Mobile app

The xStation mobile app is one of the stronger proprietary mobile terminals. It keeps the same layout as the web and desktop versions, so switching between devices does not require relearning where things are. Order entry, position management, charting and alerts are all present.

Charting is good for a mobile app but not comparable to a desktop professional terminal. Security is handled through device-level passcode or biometric login, and we would treat two-factor authentication as essential.

Web trading platform

The web platform loads quickly and is built around a central chart with a sidebar of instruments and an order ticket. The profit-and-loss display is clear, and the trader's calculator helps you size positions before you trade. It is an easy platform to navigate for newer traders and fast enough for intraday work.

Customisation is more limited than in MetaTrader or cTrader. You cannot install custom indicators, run expert advisors or deeply rearrange the workspace. For many retail traders that is a feature, not a bug; for systematic traders it is a hard limit.

Section 11

What can you trade with XTB?

XTB's product list is wide within the CFD universe. You can trade forex, stock CFDs, ETF CFDs, indices, commodities and, in supported jurisdictions, crypto CFDs. It is important to remember that most of these are derivatives, not underlying assets, so you do not own the share or the ETF and financing charges apply to leveraged positions.

Availability varies by entity and country. Some markets are not offered to retail clients in certain jurisdictions, and leverage caps differ by regulator.

Real stocks and ETFs

Not available

XTB primarily offers CFDs, not direct ownership of shares or ETFs.

Stock CFDs

Available

Broad coverage across major exchanges; commission structures vary by market.

ETF CFDs

Available

Exposure to baskets and sectors via CFDs.

Forex

Available

Spread-only pricing on standard accounts.

Indices

Available

CFDs on major global benchmarks.

Commodities

Available

CFDs on metals and energy contracts.

Crypto

Jurisdiction dependent

Crypto CFDs available in some jurisdictions; restricted or absent in others.

Options and futures

Not available

Not a standard part of the retail CFD offering.

Section 13

Trading tools & research

XTB's research and trading tools are built into xStation rather than offered as a separate suite. The emphasis is on clarity and speed: market sentiment, economic calendar, news, screeners and a trader's calculator are all one or two clicks away.

Trader's calculator

Estimate margin, pip value and swap cost before you open a position.

Market sentiment

A quick read on how other XTB clients are positioned on an instrument — useful as context, not as a signal.

Economic calendar and news

Integrated event calendar and news stream to help time entries around macro releases.

Stock screener

Filter stock CFDs by sector, region and other criteria to build a watchlist.

Price alerts

Set alerts on price levels and receive them on mobile or desktop.

No automation or custom scripting

There is no built-in strategy backtester or expert-advisor support; systematic traders will need external tools.

Section 14

XTB pros and cons

XTB pros

  • Proprietary xStation 5 platform is responsive and consistent across web, desktop and mobile
  • Broad stock CFD coverage with transparent ticket-level costs
  • No fixed minimum deposit for most standard accounts

XTB cons

  • No MetaTrader or cTrader support for traders who rely on those ecosystems
  • Primarily a CFD broker, so direct share ownership is not the focus

Section 15

Who is XTB for?

May be suitable for

  • Active traders who want a responsive proprietary platform rather than MetaTrader
  • Stock and ETF CFD traders who value transparent ticket-level costs
  • Traders who want a consistent experience across web, desktop and mobile
  • Traders looking for FCA or KNF-regulated access
  • Newer traders who find MetaTrader overwhelming and prefer a cleaner interface

May not be suitable for

  • Investors who want to hold real underlying shares or ETFs in a custody account
  • Traders who depend on MetaTrader indicators, expert advisors or cTrader automation
  • Traders who want direct exchange access or depth-of-market tools
  • Anyone who needs a full options, futures or bonds offering
  • Traders in jurisdictions where XTB's product range is restricted

These are general observations about the broker's characteristics, not personal recommendations. FXSpreadMeter does not assess individual circumstances.

Trustpilot Customer Feedback

No verified Trustpilot figures are on file for XTB yet. We publish the TrustScore and review distribution only once they have been pulled from Trustpilot, so nothing here is estimated.

View reviews on Trustpilot

Trustpilot ratings reflect customer feedback and are separate from the FXSpreadMeter broker rating. A high Trustpilot score does not mean a broker is safer, better regulated or more suitable for your trading.

FXSpreadMeter reader reviews are coming soon.

We are building our own reader review database. Once live, this panel will show positive themes, common complaints, the review date and the number of reviews analysed for XTB. We do not republish individual reviews or comments from other platforms.

Section 17

Trading risks

CFDs are leveraged and can lose more than you expect

A CFD is a derivative. Small adverse moves are amplified by leverage, and a high proportion of retail CFD accounts lose money.

Leverage caps depend on your entity

The maximum leverage available to you is set by your regulator and client classification, not the marketing headline.

Overnight financing accumulates

Holding leveraged positions for days or weeks can make financing cost exceed the opening spread.

You do not own the underlying asset

Stock and ETF CFDs give price exposure, not ownership, voting rights or dividends in the same form as holding the real instrument.

Product availability varies by jurisdiction

Crypto CFDs, leverage limits and even some stock markets may not be available in your country.

Platform risk

If your strategy depends on xStation specifically, any platform outage or limitation affects your ability to manage risk.

Compare highly rated brokers across trading costs, platforms, regulation and overall conditions.

FP Markets logo

Rank #1

FP Markets

Rating

8.8 / 10

Best for
Shares and FX in one place
Why it ranks here
FP Markets pairs raw-spread FX pricing with direct-market-access share dealing, so cost-sensitive traders and multi-asset investors can work from one account group. Five platform choices, ASIC oversight and a $100 entry point make it our strongest all-round pick this quarter.
IC Markets logo

Rank #2

IC Markets

Rating

9.4 / 10

Best for
Raw-spread trading
Why it ranks here
IC Markets is built around cheap execution rather than hand-holding. If you already know how you want to trade and value platform choice, the Raw Spread tier is one of the more compelling cost structures available. Read the entity disclosure carefully: the leverage headline you see may come from the offshore arm rather than the ASIC-regulated one.
XM Group logo

Rank #3

XM Group

Rating

8.6 / 10

Best for
New traders
Why it ranks here
XM is a sensible starting point rather than a cost leader. The tiny minimum deposit, deep education library and responsive support suit traders still finding their footing; once volume grows, the Standard account's spread-only pricing starts to look expensive next to raw-spread rivals.
eToro logo

Rank #4

eToro

Rating

8.4 / 10

Best for
Copy trading
Why it ranks here
eToro trades execution cost for accessibility. The social layer and multi-asset account are genuinely useful if you want to follow others or hold equities alongside FX, but active intraday traders will feel the spread and miss MetaTrader.
XTB logo

Rank #5

XTB

Rating

8.8 / 10

Best for
Traders who prefer a single proprietary platform
Why it ranks here
XTB is a listed international broker running its own xStation platform, with a research and education layer that suits traders who prefer one integrated interface.
Capital.com logo

Rank #6

Capital.com

Rating

8.4 / 10

Best for

Why it ranks here
Capital.com combines a clean proprietary platform with MT4 access and an in-app learning layer aimed at newer CFD traders.
