Section 01

XM Group overview

XM has spent since 2009 building the opposite proposition to the raw-spread specialists. Instead of competing on the last fraction of a pip, it competes on accessibility: very low entry deposits, micro-lot sizing, a large research and education library, and multilingual support across a long list of countries. That has made it one of the largest retail brokers by client count.

Pricing sits in the middle of the field rather than at the sharp end. XM advertises forex spreads from 0.8 pips*; Standard and Micro accounts are spread-only with variable spreads (XM's own costs document uses 1.6 pips on EUR/USD as an example), while the Ultra Low tier trades tighter spreads for a small commission. For a trader placing a handful of positions a week, that gap is immaterial; for a scalper turning over dozens of lots a day, it is the whole argument.

The platform stack is MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, with no proprietary desktop terminal. Our view is that XM suits newer and intermediate traders who value low barriers to entry, granular position sizing and genuinely substantial educational material. Traders whose edge depends on the tightest possible execution cost will find cheaper venues elsewhere.

XM operates through several separately licensed companies. The entity that opens your account — Cypriot, Australian, Belize or another group company — determines your leverage cap, product access, investor protections and complaint route. Read the legal entity named in your client agreement before funding.

FXSpreadMeter assessment

8.7/ 10

FXSpreadMeter score for XM Group

8.7 / 10

Weighted composite of the category ratings below. It reflects our current research view and is revised whenever a broker's pricing, regulation or platform offering changes.

Regulation8.2
Trading Costs8.3
Platforms8.5
Account Options9.0
Trading Tools8.5
Markets8.8
Customer Support8.9
Education9.1

XM's strongest cards are accessibility and support material. A minimum deposit around $5, micro-lot sizing and a swap-free option in supported regions mean a beginner can trade real money at a risk level that will not destroy an account while learning. The education library and daily research are substantial rather than token, and multilingual support in many languages is a real differentiator for non-English-speaking traders.

Regulatory coverage is broad, with ASIC entities alongside offshore licences, so most traders can be onboarded somewhere in the group. Negative balance protection under the Australian entity is a meaningful safeguard for inexperienced traders.

Costs and platform choice are where XM gives ground. Variable Standard spreads (1.6 pips on EUR/USD in XM's own cost example) are competitive against other spread-only brokers but not against raw-spread accounts starting near zero, and the Ultra Low tier narrows rather than closes that gap. There is no proprietary platform and no cTrader or TradingView execution, so you are choosing MetaTrader. And the 1:1000 leverage headline belongs to offshore entities — a ASIC retail client is capped at 1:30, which is the safer arrangement but not the advertised one.

Section 05

XM Group fees & trading costs

XM's cost model is mostly spread-only. Standard and Micro accounts carry no commission, with the broker's margin inside a variable spread. XM advertises spreads from 0.8 pips*, and its costs document uses 1.6 pips on EUR/USD as an example transaction spread. The Ultra Low account quotes tighter spreads and adds a small commission. *Spreads are variable and can change with market conditions; the advertised minimum is not the typical spread for every pair.

For low-frequency trading the difference between tiers rarely matters. For high-frequency trading, run the numbers properly: compare XM's Ultra Low all-in cost against a raw-spread-plus-commission account at your actual monthly volume, not on headline spreads.

  • The FXSpreadMeter verdict compares each cost against other active brokers in our directory for the same product type. It is relative, not an overall rating.
  • Spread-only pricing is easier to read but not automatically cheaper; convert both models to cost per lot before comparing.
  • Swap-free status changes the multi-day cost picture materially and is region-dependent.

Section 07

Is XM Group regulated?

XM is a group of separately licensed companies rather than one regulated firm. Which entity onboards you determines your leverage cap, the products you can access and the protections available if a dispute arises.

This is the difference between a 1:30 cap with compensation-scheme eligibility and negative balance protection, and a much higher leverage cap under a lighter offshore framework. Both exist under the same brand.

Section 08

Opening a XM Group account

Registration is fully online and quick, which is part of XM's appeal. You provide your details, choose an account tier and platform, verify your identity, complete the suitability questions and fund.

The tier decision is the one worth pausing on. Micro gives the finest position-size control, Standard is the default for full lots, and Ultra Low trades a commission for tighter spreads.

  1. 1

    Register online

Provide your details and country of residence, which determines the XM entity handling your account.

  2. 2

    Choose your account tier

Micro for very small sizing, Standard for spread-only full lots, Ultra Low for tighter spreads with a small commission.

  3. 3

    Choose MT4 or MT5

Both are supported. MT5 covers more instruments and timeframes; MT4 has the deepest expert advisor ecosystem.

  4. 4

    Verify your identity

Upload government photo ID and proof of address. Required before withdrawal and, in most jurisdictions, before live trading.

  5. 5

    Complete the suitability assessment

Answer honestly — responses can affect the leverage and products offered to you.

  6. 6

    Fund and start small

The low minimum plus micro lots let you trade live at genuinely small risk while you validate the strategy.

Section 09

Deposits & withdrawals

XM supports the usual retail methods — bank transfer, cards and supported e-wallets — with availability by region. The very low minimum deposit is a genuine differentiator, though the practical floor is whatever margins your intended position size.

Withdrawals generally return to the original funding source for anti-money-laundering reasons. XM typically does not charge for standard withdrawals; banks and intermediaries may, and international transfers add settlement time.

Section 10

XM Group platforms

XM is a MetaTrader house. Both MT4 and MT5 are offered across desktop, web and mobile, and there is no proprietary terminal, cTrader option or TradingView execution route.

For most traders that is sufficient — MetaTrader is the most widely documented retail platform in existence, and every tutorial, indicator and expert advisor you find online will assume it. Traders who specifically want depth-of-market or TradingView-native execution will need another broker.

MetaTrader 4

The most established retail platform, with the largest ecosystem of expert advisors and custom indicators.

Check before funding: Test any EA on demo first; server behaviour differs between brokers.

MetaTrader 5

Broader instrument coverage, more timeframes, depth-of-market on supported symbols and a built-in economic calendar.

Check before funding: MT4 expert advisors are not directly portable to MT5.

MT WebTrader

Browser trading with no installation, on both MT4 and MT5.

Check before funding: Charting depth is lower than the desktop builds.

XM mobile apps

Account management and MetaTrader mobile trading on iOS and Android.

Check before funding: No expert advisor execution on mobile.

Mobile app

Mobile trading is through the MetaTrader apps plus XM's own account management app. They are reliable for monitoring and managing open positions, and the account app makes funding and verification straightforward.

As with any mobile MetaTrader setup, charting tools are reduced and automated strategies do not run. Enable two-factor authentication and device biometrics.

Web trading platform

MT4 and MT5 WebTrader run in the browser with no installation, which pairs well with XM's low-friction onboarding — you can be trading a demo within minutes.

For serious analysis and any automation, use the desktop builds; treat web access as a convenient secondary route.

Section 11

What can you trade with XM Group?

XM lists over 1,000 instruments. Forex is the core, with CFDs on indices, commodities, metals, energies and shares filling out the range across account tiers.

Availability depends on your entity and jurisdiction, so the exact list you see after onboarding may be narrower than the marketing figure.

Forex

Available

55+ pairs across majors, minors and crosses, tradable in micro lots.

Indices

Available

Major global benchmark indices as CFDs.

Metals

Gold, silver and other precious metals.

Energies

Oil and gas contracts.

Commodities

Share CFDs

Stock index futures CFDs

Available

Futures-referenced index contracts on supported entities.

Crypto CFDs

Jurisdiction dependent

Offered only where local rules permit; unavailable in several regions.

Direct share ownership

Not available

Share exposure is via CFDs, not physical ownership.

Section 13

Trading tools & research

Education and research are the strongest part of XM's non-pricing offering, and the reason many newer traders choose it. The material is broad, regularly updated and available in many languages.

Live webinars

Regular multilingual sessions covering platform mechanics, analysis and risk management.

Structured video courses

Sequenced lessons from platform basics through to strategy, useful as a first curriculum.

Daily research and commentary

Technical and macro notes that explain what moved and why, which builds market literacy over time.

Economic calendar

Event schedules for timing entries and avoiding known volatility spikes.

Trading calculators

Position size, margin, pip value and swap calculators for sizing decisions before you place a trade.

Micro lots and demo accounts

The practical teaching tool: rehearse on demo, then trade live at genuinely small size instead of jumping to full lots.

Section 14

XM Group pros and cons

XM Group pros

  • Very low entry deposit makes testing the platform cheap
  • Large instrument catalogue across FX, indices, shares and commodities
  • Extensive webinar and tutorial programme

XM Group cons

  • Standard-account spreads are wider than raw-pricing competitors
  • Some group entities sit under non-tier-one regulators, so terms depend on your country

Section 15

Who is XM Group for?

May be suitable for

  • Beginners who want a very low entry deposit and micro-lot position sizing
  • Traders who value structured education, webinars and daily research
  • Non-English speakers who need multilingual platform and support coverage
  • Swing and position traders for whom a fraction of a pip is not decisive
  • Traders in supported regions who need a swap-free account

May not be suitable for

  • Scalpers and high-frequency traders who need raw spreads from 0.0 pips
  • Traders who want cTrader, TradingView execution or a proprietary terminal
  • Investors who want to own real shares rather than trade CFDs
  • Traders who want high leverage while staying under ASIC, where the retail cap is 1:30
  • Anyone in a jurisdiction where XM's product range is materially restricted

What traders say about XM Group

Trustpilot Customer Feedback

No verified Trustpilot figures are on file for XM Group yet. We publish the TrustScore and review distribution only once they have been pulled from Trustpilot, so nothing here is estimated.

Trustpilot ratings reflect customer feedback and are separate from the FXSpreadMeter broker rating. A high Trustpilot score does not mean a broker is safer, better regulated or more suitable for your trading.

FXSpreadMeter reader reviews are coming soon.

We are building our own reader review database. Once live, this panel will show positive themes, common complaints, the review date and the number of reviews analysed for XM Group. We do not republish individual reviews or comments from other platforms.

Section 17

Trading risks

CFDs are leveraged products

A high proportion of retail CFD accounts lose money. Low minimum deposits reduce the entry barrier, not the risk of loss.

Very high leverage is available offshore

Ratios up to 1:1000 on some entities can wipe out an account on a small adverse move. ASIC retail clients are capped at 1:30 for good reason.

Protections differ by entity

Compensation eligibility, negative balance protection and complaint routes vary between the Cypriot, Australian and offshore companies.

Spread-only is not automatically cheap

A spread-only price with no commission can cost more than 0.0 pips plus commission at higher volume. Convert to cost per lot before deciding.

Overnight financing accumulates

On multi-day leveraged holds, swap can exceed the original spread cost. Swap-free availability is region-dependent.

Education is not advice

Webinars and research are general information. They do not account for your circumstances and are not a substitute for your own risk management.

FP Markets logo

Rank #1

FP Markets

Rating

8.8 / 10

Best for
Shares and FX in one place
Why it ranks here
FP Markets pairs raw-spread FX pricing with direct-market-access share dealing, so cost-sensitive traders and multi-asset investors can work from one account group. Five platform choices, ASIC oversight and a $100 entry point make it our strongest all-round pick this quarter.
IC Markets logo

Rank #2

IC Markets

Rating

9.4 / 10

Best for
Raw-spread trading
Why it ranks here
IC Markets is built around cheap execution rather than hand-holding. If you already know how you want to trade and value platform choice, the Raw Spread tier is one of the more compelling cost structures available. Read the entity disclosure carefully: the leverage headline you see may come from the offshore arm rather than the ASIC-regulated one.
XM Group logo

Rank #3

XM Group

Rating

8.6 / 10

Best for
New traders
Why it ranks here
XM is a sensible starting point rather than a cost leader. The tiny minimum deposit, deep education library and responsive support suit traders still finding their footing; once volume grows, the Standard account's spread-only pricing starts to look expensive next to raw-spread rivals.
eToro logo

Rank #4

eToro

Rating

8.4 / 10

Best for
Copy trading
Why it ranks here
eToro trades execution cost for accessibility. The social layer and multi-asset account are genuinely useful if you want to follow others or hold equities alongside FX, but active intraday traders will feel the spread and miss MetaTrader.
