Advertised spreads tell only part of the story. "From 0.0 pips" usually describes the tightest moment of the day on a commission account, not what you see when you actually click buy. This topic is for collecting real numbers from real traders.

    Please include in your reply

    • Broker and the regulated entity you are with, because conditions often differ between entities of the same broker.
    • Account type (for example a standard, no-commission account or a raw-spread account with commission).
    • Typical spread you see on EUR/USD, and roughly what time of day (London session, New York session, Asian session, around news).
    • Commission per lot, if any, so others can work out the full cost.
    • Platform (MT4, MT5, cTrader, the broker's own platform and so on).

    How to compare fairly

To compare a no-commission account with a commission account, convert everything into one figure. A simple way is total cost in pips per standard lot round turn:

spread (pips) + commission round turn ÷ pip value

On EUR/USD a pip is worth about 10 units of the account currency per standard lot. So a 0.2 pip spread plus a 7.00 round-turn commission works out to about 0.9 pips in total. Compare that with, say, a 1.2 pip spread on a no-commission account.

    Things that make spreads widen

    • The daily rollover around 5 pm New York time
    • Major news releases such as US non-farm payrolls or central bank decisions
    • Low-liquidity holiday periods
