Section 01

eToro overview

eToro is a multi-asset brokerage best known for turning trading into something closer to a social network. Alongside a standard order ticket you get a feed of other users' positions, a directory of traders whose portfolios you can mirror automatically, and thematic baskets that bundle a whole investment idea into one instrument. That combination is unusual: most brokers either sell execution or sell a community, and eToro has built its business around selling both at once.

Underneath the social layer, the product mix is broad. Depending on where you live and which eToro company holds your account, you may be buying real shares and ETFs, trading contracts for difference on those same names, holding crypto assets, or dealing in forex and commodity CFDs. Those are legally different things with different costs, different protections and different tax treatment, and eToro's interface deliberately smooths over the distinction — so it pays to know which one you are actually buying.

Our view is that eToro is built for people who want a single, approachable place to hold several asset classes and who value discovery and community over granular execution control. Traders who care about routing, depth of book, custom indicators and algorithmic execution will find the platform deliberately simplified, and that simplification is the trade-off at the heart of this review.

eToro operates through several separately licensed companies. The entity that signs your client agreement determines which products you can access, what leverage applies, which investor-protection scheme covers you and how fees are charged, so conditions described here may not match what you see once you register from your own country.

eToro earns most of its points on breadth and usability rather than on execution cost. Getting from sign-up to a first position is genuinely fast, the mobile app is one of the more coherent in the sector, and copy trading is properly integrated rather than bolted on. For an investor who wants stocks, crypto exposure and some leveraged trading in one login, very few competitors package it this neatly.

It loses points on cost transparency. The headline is commission-free, but the money is made in the spread, in currency conversion on a dollar-denominated account, in overnight financing on leveraged positions and in the flat withdrawal charge. None of that is hidden — it is all published — but a trader who evaluates eToro only on the commission line will underestimate what a year of activity costs.

It also loses points on trader control. There is no MetaTrader, no expert advisor ecosystem, no depth-of-market ladder and limited order customisation compared with a specialist CFD or multi-asset broker. That is a design decision rather than an oversight, and it is precisely why the platform feels approachable — but it caps how far an active trader can grow inside it.

Section 05

eToro fees & trading costs

eToro's pricing is built around spreads rather than commissions, which makes it look cheaper than it is at first glance and harder to compare against commission-based brokers. The practical way to assess it is to add together the four charges you are most likely to meet in a normal year: the spread on each trade, currency conversion in and out of a US dollar account, overnight financing on any leveraged position, and the flat withdrawal fee.

Costs also differ by asset class. Real share investing is the cheapest part of the offering; crypto and leveraged CFDs are meaningfully more expensive, particularly if held for weeks rather than hours.

Spread and commission are shown per account type — a raw or ECN figure is not comparable with a spread-only account.

  • The FXSpreadMeter view column compares each cost against the current pricing of the other active brokers in our directory for the same product type, at retail size. It is a relative judgement, not a rating of the broker as a whole.
  • If you deposit in euros or pounds and trade US shares, conversion cost will likely exceed everything else on this table over a year of regular activity.
  • Leveraged positions held for weeks accumulate financing that can quietly exceed the spread you paid to open.

Section 07

Is eToro regulated?

eToro is not a single regulated company. It is a group, and each regional company holds its own licence, offers its own product set and sits under its own complaints and compensation regime. Two people using an identically branded app can therefore have materially different legal positions.

That structure matters most in three places: which products you can access at all, what maximum leverage you are offered as a retail client, and what happens to your money if the entity holding it fails. Never assume a licence you read about in a review applies to your own account — the entity name is written into the client agreement you accept at sign-up.

Section 08

Opening a eToro account

Registration is fully online and deliberately quick, but the account is not usable at full capacity until identity checks clear. Expect to complete verification before withdrawing, and expect an appropriateness questionnaire if leveraged products are part of the offer in your country.

We do not publish an approval time. Verification depends on the documents you submit, your jurisdiction and the checks eToro runs, and quoting a fixed turnaround would be misleading.

  1. 1

    Create the account

Register with an email address or a linked account and set your country of residence, which determines the eToro entity you deal with.

  2. 2

    Verify your identity

Upload government-issued photo identification and a proof of address. Verification is a regulatory requirement, not an optional step.

  3. 3

    Complete the suitability questions

Answer the knowledge and experience questionnaire honestly. Your answers can restrict access to leveraged or complex products.

  4. 4

    Choose your account settings

Set your base currency where the option exists and review the leverage and product access your entity offers.

  5. 5

    Fund the account

Deposit using a supported method for your region. Note the conversion cost if your funding currency is not the account currency.

  6. 6

    Start with the demo first

Use the virtual portfolio to test order entry, copy trading mechanics and the fee display before committing real money.

Section 09

Deposits & withdrawals

Funding is straightforward and the method list is broad by industry standards, covering cards, bank transfer and several e-wallets in most regions. The complications are currency and withdrawal cost rather than access.

Because most retail accounts are denominated in US dollars, depositing in another currency triggers a conversion each way. Combined with the flat withdrawal fee, this makes eToro relatively expensive for someone who moves small amounts in and out frequently, and relatively unremarkable for someone who funds once and leaves the balance in place.

Section 10

eToro platforms

eToro does not offer MetaTrader, cTrader or any third-party terminal. Everything happens in its own web platform and mobile app, which are built as one product with a shared design language rather than as a desktop tool and a stripped-down phone companion.

The upside is coherence: the same portfolio, the same feed, the same copy-trading controls in both places. The downside is ceiling — you cannot install custom indicators, run an expert advisor or attach a third-party execution tool.

eToro web platform

Full account management, charting, social feed, Smart Portfolios and copy-trading controls in the browser with no install.

Check before funding: Whether the charting depth is enough for your strategy before you rely on it.

eToro mobile app

Near-parity with the web experience, including funding, copying, position management and alerts.

Check before funding: That biometric login and two-factor authentication are enabled from day one.

TradingView charts

Third-party charting can be used for analysis alongside eToro for execution.

Check before funding: That you are comfortable analysing in one tool and executing in another.

MetaTrader 4 / 5

Not offered.

Check before funding: If your strategy depends on MT4 indicators or automation, this is a hard blocker.

Mobile app

The app is one of eToro's genuine strengths. Portfolio, watchlists, the discovery feed and the copy-trading module all sit within a couple of taps, order entry is simplified to a single ticket with clear leverage and stop controls, and push notifications cover fills, price alerts and copied-trader activity.

Chart tooling is intentionally lighter than a professional terminal — fewer drawing tools, fewer studies, no multi-chart layout. Security is handled with biometric unlock and two-factor authentication, both of which we would treat as mandatory rather than optional.

Web trading platform

The web platform organises around discovery rather than the order book: search and thematic browsing sit at the front, portfolio and watchlists are one click away, and the feed for each instrument mixes price with user commentary. Order placement supports market and limit entries with stop-loss and take-profit attached at ticket level.

Customisation is limited. You cannot rebuild the workspace the way you can in a professional terminal, and there is no depth-of-market ladder. For position traders and investors that is rarely a problem; for scalpers it is a real one.

Section 11

What can you trade with eToro?

eToro's product list is wide, but the legal form of what you are buying changes across it. In supported jurisdictions you may hold genuine shares and ETFs; in others, or on leveraged or short positions, the same ticker is traded as a CFD, which is a cash-settled derivative with no ownership, no voting rights and financing charges attached.

The interface treats both the same way at the point of order entry. Read the instrument details before you trade — that is where the distinction is made explicit.

Real stocks

Jurisdiction dependent

Unleveraged long positions in supported markets are typically executed as real share ownership.

ETFs

Jurisdiction dependent

Stock and ETF CFDs

Section 12

eToro copy trading

CopyTrader is the feature eToro is built around. You allocate a sum of money to another user, and from that moment their new positions are opened proportionally in your account and closed when they close. You are not handing over your money — it stays in your account, and you can stop copying at any point — but you are handing over the decisions.

Finding someone to copy is a filtering exercise. You can screen by return history, by risk score, by markets traded, by how long the account has been active and by how many people already copy them. Our strong preference is length of record over headline return: a twelve-month streak in a trending market tells you far less than several years across different conditions.

Mechanically, your result will never match the copied trader's exactly. Entry prices differ slightly, your allocation is smaller, spreads and financing apply to your own positions, and any minimum trade size can round your exposure. Treat published performance as a description of the past, not a forecast.

Allocation control

You set the amount copied, and you can add to or reduce that allocation without contacting the trader.

Copy stop-loss

A threshold that closes the copy relationship if the allocated amount falls to a set level. It limits, but does not eliminate, downside.

Copy open trades

You choose whether to inherit the trader's existing positions or only mirror new ones from the moment you start.

Stop copying at will

Ending a copy closes the mirrored positions at prevailing market prices, which may crystallise a loss.

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Copy trading does not remove investment risk, does not guarantee profit and can lose you money quickly when leverage is involved. A trader's historical record, risk score and follower count are not assurances about future behaviour.

Section 13

Trading tools & research

eToro's tooling is oriented towards discovery and portfolio understanding rather than execution engineering. If you want screeners, sentiment and thematic research, there is plenty here. If you want backtesting, custom scripting or automated execution, there is not.

Social feed and sentiment

Per-instrument commentary and aggregated positioning data give a quick read on crowd behaviour — useful as context, dangerous as a signal.

Smart Portfolios

Pre-built thematic baskets with a stated strategy and periodic rebalancing, for exposure to an idea rather than a single name.

Watchlists and alerts

Price alerts and saved lists that sync between web and mobile.

Virtual portfolio

A funded demo environment that mirrors the live interface, including copy-trading mechanics.

Academy content

Structured educational material aimed at newer investors rather than professional traders.

No automation layer

There is no expert advisor support, no API for retail strategy execution and no strategy backtester.

Section 14

eToro pros and cons

eToro pros

  • CopyTrader lets you mirror other traders without building a strategy yourself
  • Publicly listed on Nasdaq, so financials are disclosed regularly
  • Single account covers FX, equities, ETFs and crypto

eToro cons

  • FX spreads are wide compared with commission-based brokers
  • No MetaTrader support, so existing EAs and indicators do not transfer

Section 15

Who is eToro for?

May be suitable for

  • Newer investors who want one approachable interface across shares, crypto and leveraged products
  • People who actively want copy trading and social discovery as part of how they invest
  • Investors who prefer thematic, ready-made exposure over building a portfolio name by name
  • Mobile-first users who want full account functionality on a phone
  • Buy-and-hold investors funding in US dollars, who avoid the conversion drag entirely

May not be suitable for

  • Traders who need MetaTrader, custom indicators, expert advisors or algorithmic execution
  • Scalpers and high-frequency traders sensitive to spread and to the absence of depth-of-market tools
  • Anyone funding in a currency other than US dollars who moves money in and out frequently
  • Investors requiring bonds, futures or a full options chain in every market
  • Traders who want leverage above the caps their local regulator imposes

Section 16

What traders say about eToro

Trustpilot Customer Feedback

No verified Trustpilot figures are on file for eToro yet. We publish the TrustScore and review distribution only once they have been pulled from Trustpilot, so nothing here is estimated.

Trustpilot ratings reflect customer feedback and are separate from the FXSpreadMeter broker rating. A high Trustpilot score does not mean a broker is safer, better regulated or more suitable for your trading.

FXSpreadMeter reader reviews are coming soon.

We are building our own reader review database. Once live, this panel will show positive themes, common complaints, the review date and the number of reviews analysed for eToro. We do not republish individual reviews or comments from other platforms.

Section 17

Trading risks

CFDs are leveraged and can lose more than you expect

A CFD is a cash-settled derivative. Small adverse moves are amplified by leverage, and a large proportion of retail CFD accounts lose money.

Leverage cuts both ways

Higher leverage shrinks the move required to trigger a margin close-out. The maximum available to you depends on your entity and client classification.

Crypto is highly volatile

Digital assets can move double-digit percentages within a day, and regulatory treatment continues to change by jurisdiction.

Copy trading does not remove risk

You inherit another person's decisions, including their drawdowns. Historical performance is not predictive.

Currency exposure is a hidden position

Holding a US dollar account while your living costs are in another currency creates FX exposure on top of your trading risk.

Availability and terms change

Products, leverage and protections vary by entity and can be withdrawn or amended without notice in your jurisdiction.

FP Markets logo

Rank #1

FP Markets

Rating

8.8 / 10

Best for
Shares and FX in one place
Why it ranks here
FP Markets pairs raw-spread FX pricing with direct-market-access share dealing, so cost-sensitive traders and multi-asset investors can work from one account group. Five platform choices, ASIC oversight and no minimum deposit make it our strongest all-round pick this quarter.
IC Markets logo

Rank #2

IC Markets

Rating

9.4 / 10

Best for
Raw-spread trading
Why it ranks here
IC Markets is built around cheap execution rather than hand-holding. If you already know how you want to trade and value platform choice, the Raw Spread tier is one of the more compelling cost structures available. Read the entity disclosure carefully: the leverage headline you see may come from the offshore arm rather than the ASIC-regulated one.
XM Group logo

Rank #3

XM Group

Rating

8.6 / 10

Best for
New traders
Why it ranks here
XM is a sensible starting point rather than a cost leader. The tiny minimum deposit, deep education library and responsive support suit traders still finding their footing; once volume grows, the Standard account's spread-only pricing starts to look expensive next to raw-spread rivals.
eToro logo

Rank #4

eToro

Rating

8.4 / 10

Best for
Copy trading
Why it ranks here
eToro trades execution cost for accessibility. The social layer and multi-asset account are genuinely useful if you want to follow others or hold equities alongside FX, but active intraday traders will feel the spread and miss MetaTrader.
